I haven’t done a ‘black and white’ post in a while, so thought I’d kick the series off again with a selection of photos from my recent trip to Montenegro.
To be honest, I had no idea what to expect when I arrived in Montenegro, but I was greeted with a friendly, beautiful, and really, really clean country. I was based in Budva on the new ‘Riviera’ and took trips to Cetinje, the old capital, and Kotor (and part of Kotor Bay).
Budva Old Town isn’t as old as its name may suggest. An earthquake in 1979 tore down most of the area, but it was rebuilt in the same style as before. The result? A maze of winding alleyways and cobbled streets that are in such good condition they look almost plastic.
It seemed like every shop in Budva was offering discounts… And the signs were suspiciously permanent. Here is a snippet of life taking place down one of the side streets in the old town.
This island has been dubbed James Bond Island because part of Casino Royale was filmed here. It is home to a hotel that costs around £1,000 a night to stay there, and has seen the likes of Madonna and the Rolling Stones grace its rooms.
Kotor Bay is probably the most well-known part of Montenegro and it’s easy to see why. The expanse of water and its surrounding areas are beautifully picturesque, with rolling hills, quirky boats, and interesting buildings.
There are lots of churches in Kotor’s Old Town, and I wandered out the back of one to find this shrine sitting above a stone sink which I imagine produced holy water. Whilst there, I saw this man washing his face in the water and holding a bouquet of flowers.
The town of Cetinje was a bit like a ghost town when I visited. The former capital of Montenegro is now a giant museum, harbouring the history and culture of the country. I’ll talk more about this in another post, so sign up for updates to ensure you don’t miss out!
I’m planning to publish a number of posts on Montenegro, including a budget report and things you might want to do there. If there’s anything you want to know please ask and I’ll see if I can help out!
